About Bennachie Special Protection Area

Bennachie Special Protection Area (SPA) encompasses a prominent range of hills located northwest of Aberdeen, Scotland. The area covers heathland, moorland, and ancient woodland habitats, supporting a variety of wildlife, particularly important bird species such as hen harriers and peregrine falcons, making it a vital conservation site under the EU Birds Directive. The area’s highest summit, Mither Tap, rises to 518 meters (1,699 feet) and provides panoramic views across the surrounding Aberdeenshire countryside. Historically, the Bennachie range is dotted with archaeological remains, including Iron Age forts and ancient cairns, contributing to the cultural significance of the landscape. Outdoor enthusiasts and birdwatchers frequent Bennachie for hiking, wildlife observation, and exploring its natural beauty. The network of maintained footpaths and waymarked trails create accessible routes varying in length and difficulty. Its proximity to Aberdeen allows for convenient day trips while providing a wild, open space reminiscent of the Scottish Highlands. Visitor appeal is further enhanced by well-signposted trails, interpretation boards, and the opportunity to witness rare raptors soaring overhead. The protection afforded by the SPA designation helps preserve crucial habitat for breeding birds and supports ongoing conservation efforts in the region.
